Our PE curriculum and enrichment programme is crafted to empower all students with the necessary skills and insight needed to participate in a wide array of individual and team sports, breaking down barriers of gender, race and inclusivity along the way.
We offer a broad and balanced curriculum that not only champions physical health, but also instils a lifelong passion for sport and physical activity. This approach is designed to enhance mental and social well-being, encourage mutual respect and tolerance and to build resilience in the face of adversity. Our students are immersed in specialist knowledge that enriches both their personal growth and the wider community that we serve.
Central to our curriculum is the embodiment of SJBC's Catholic ethos of RUAH: Respect, Understanding, Affection and Humour. These values are seamlessly integrated into our PE lessons, reflecting our belief that these are not merely essential characteristics and skills for life, but also necessities to achieve success in the world of sport. At SJBC, RUAH is not an add-on; it is the heartbeat of our approach, ensuring that our students not only excel physically but also grow to become compassionate, understanding and joyful individuals.
Please feel free to contact me here at the school by email should you have any questions or queries.
Within KS3, our students are exposed to a wide range of physical activities that inspire students of all abilities to succeed and excel in physical activity. They are provided with opportunities to develop and master fundamental movement skills across a variety of sports, acquire a range of tactics and strategies to outwit opponents and overcome intellectual and physical challenges and analyse performances of their own and others’ to accurately identify strengths and areas for improvement.
Intertwined into practical lessons will be theoretical content on anatomy and physiology, which will provide students with a conceptual understanding of the musculoskeletal system and the long-term health benefits associated with physical activity. This will encourage students to continue PE as an academic discipline at Key Stage 4 & 5, having built a solid foundation for GCSE and post 16+. For those who do not, it will provide them with a solid understanding of how to lead an active and healthy lifestyle and the benefits associated with keeping fit.
In GCSE PE, students will build upon previous knowledge learnt at KS3 to become experts across a range of sports through an accomplished practical performance. This will include three physical activities, both team and individual. Alongside this, students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of the physiological and psychological factors that underpin physical activity and sport, the contribution which physical activity and sport make to health, fitness and well-being and finally, the key socio-cultural influences which can affect a person’s involvement in physical activity and sport.
Students who are not completing a formal qualification in PE will follow the Core PE curriculum. This will allow them to continue to gain a wide range of contextualised opportunities and experiences in both a leisurely and competitive sporting environment.
The sports included in the Core PE curriculum will be a continuation from Key Stage 3, with an emphasis being placed on recreational and sporting activities for personal enjoyment and fitness. Students will have the opportunity to select a sport of their choice from a wide range of activities, which will encourage students to not only take ownership of their learning, but to also enjoy their continued participation in physical activity and understand its value and contribution towards a person’s health and wellbeing.
At SJBC, we want our students to embrace living an active and healthy lifestyle that will provide them with the confidence and opportunity to explore sport both within school and in the wider community.
At KS5, students will study the Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate in Sport and Physical activity. This vocationally specific qualification will develop students’ passion for sport and provide an insight into how excellence in coaching, performance and leadership can be improved within the sports organisation.
Students will be able to build upon previous knowledge learnt at KS4 to further develop their depth of understanding of the body systems and their effects to physical activity, practical skills in sports and nutrition for diet and exercise.
The course will look to develop students' coaching skills, which will require them to deliver a progressive and sequenced series of leadership sessions to others, before using this knowledge to organise and plan their own sporting event. As a result of this, students will be able to explain and perform a range of different roles to make the sporting event successful.
In addition, students will also learn how to recognise and treat common sports injuries by utilising a selection of appropriate rehabilitation programmes. They will be required to apply their understanding of sports psychology to evaluate the psychological impacts of sports injuries and how best to minimise their risk.
